Theories of human altruism: a systematic review

Abstract: Of a total of 1881 potentially eligible records, 97 original theory articles were included in the present systematic literature review. Some of the reasons for exclusion of records after full-text review were if the theoretical approaches discussed were non-human specific and were of a philosophical and non-social psychological background. The eligibility criteria used in the full-text review also excluded articles which were largely opinion pieces or commentaries and stemmed from evolutionary arguments. Early… Show more

“…The interview data were analyzed using the inductive approach to qualitative data analysis, in particular, the thematic analysis technique, which is a method of identifying and interpreting patterned meaning across the collected data. The analysis approach comprised six phases, including coding, searching, reviewing, defining, and naming themes and then weaving together the analytic narrative, data quotes, and discussion in light of the existing literature [18]. In this study, the data analysis was undertaken separately by the first and second authors of this study to strengthen the analysis process by supplementing and contesting each other's statements [19].…”

“…Along these lines, it is suggested (Berliner and Masterson, 2015;Feigin et al, 2014) that empathy does not always lead to altruistic action and indeed could lead away from it. The origins of altruism are a desire to interact and co-operate with others (Dahl and Brownell, 2019); thus, children might initially participate in helping behaviours because they want to be involved or because they see such behaviour as the social norm (Feigin et al, 2014). Dahl and Brownell (2019) give the example of the young child helping to tidy up initially from the perspective of joining in.…”

“…Previous research has established two sub‐components of empathy, empathetic concern (also known as trait empathy) and perspective‐taking (also known as cognitive empathy) and findings demonstrate that both of these drive costly altruism (FeldmanHall, Dalgleish, Evans, & Mobbs, ), that is the tendency to help, comfort and share self‐interest with other people. The core features of altruism involve self‐sacrificing voluntarily and intentionally with the primary goal of helping another individual (Baston, ; Eisenberg & Miller, ; Feigin, Owens, & Goodyear‐Smith, ).…”
