Background Although play is viewed as a childhood occupation that is spontaneous, it can be limited in children with HIV/AIDS. This study explored the perspectives of caregivers from Zimbabwe on the play of children with HIV/AIDS. Methodology A descriptive qualitative research approach was used to explore the perceptions of caregivers on play of children living with HIV/AIDS. Fifteen caregivers of children aged 4–9 years diagnosed with HIV/AIDS were purposively sampled. Two interviews were carried out with each of the caregivers. Findings were analysed thematically. Findings Four major themes were generated from the study: ‘Ubuntu is no more’, ‘Survival is primary (chikuru kurarama)’, ‘Play affirms that my child is still like other children’ and ‘More is required for this child’. Although issues of survival were paramount, caregivers were able to highlight the importance of play in affirming childhood, identifying the specific needs for play of children with HIV/AIDS. Conclusion and Significance Play, like all other human occupation, is contextually situated. Poverty and health status are key in shaping how families prioritise play. However, the ability to play for a child with HIV/AIDS also seems to mitigate stigma and may disrupt the ‘HIV is death’ narrative.

A scoping review exploring ‘opportunity’ in occupational science: Possibilities for conceptual development

The availability of and access to fair opportunities has been proposed as significant to promoting occupational justice. This paper presents a scoping review that aimed to explore how the concept 'opportunity' has been understood within occupational science. Following Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) methodological framework, we identified, screened, and selected 12 papers that focused on the theorization of opportunity or concepts and/or frameworks proposed to be related. Our thematic synthesis of these papers revealed three themes: Opportunity conceptualized as synonymous with capabilities, Occupational opportunity conceptualized as an option to participate, and Implicit theorization of opportunity couched within social transformation. Collectively these themes revealed that theorization about opportunity is implicit and largely focused on access to basic resources. Opportunity was also shown to be a concept that holds importance for a socially transformative occupational science agenda because of the relationship it holds with situations of inequality and injustice. Although the third theme teases out some of the relationships that opportunity holds to other concepts relevant for social transformation, this theorization remains limited. We conclude that further scholarship should involve clarifying disciplinary terminology and providing insight into how opportunity could contribute to occupational justice. We end by providing some suggestions for how to take up this challenge.

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar e debater construtos teórico-metodológicos a partir da disciplina de Terapia Ocupacional que podem servir enquanto categorias conceituais e práticas para operar e responder às questões da cidade. Para tanto, ancora-se em três conceitos: analfabetismo urbanístico, interdisciplinaridade e envolvimento ocupacional. Os dois primeiros são discutidos à luz dos ensinamentos da arquiteta e urbanista Ermínia Maricato, na qual discute o modo de produção e difusão de conhecimentos sobre a cidade, propondo-a como um campo educativo e de múltiplas perspectivas teóricas e políticas, que disputam narrativas e tecnologias entre si. Já o terceiro, envolvimento ocupacional, se dá a partir dos Estudos da Ocupação Humana (EOH) enquanto um campo epistêmico que se debruça sobre o objeto ‘ocupação humana’ para fundamentar a disciplina de Terapia Ocupacional, e áreas afins. Destaca-se que o envolvimento ocupacional é uma experiência, individual e coletiva, sobre os modos de realizar a vida e participar dela socialmente. Deste modo, a cidade é, para a Terapia Ocupacional, o espaço social privilegiado para o envolvimento ocupacional no autocuidado, no lazer, no trabalho, nos estudos, na política, na vida comunitária, entre outras ocupações coletivas, que cumprem funções e significados diversos para garantir tanto o direito à cidade como produzir as desigualdades socioterritoriais. Por tanto, propõe-se que a Terapia Ocupacional enquanto uma área que se dedica, teórica e metodologicamente, ao envolvimento ocupacional de pessoas, grupos e populações, possui significativas contribuições à produção de conhecimentos e tecnologias interdisciplinares sobre a cidade, colaborando ética e tecnicamente para a responsividade social de equalizar o analfabetismo urbanístico e as assimetrias no cotidiano das cidades.
