Theorizing power: Weber, Parsons, Foucault and neostructuralism

Abstract: The article is an attempt to develop a synthetic conception of power based on Weber's, Parsons's and Foucault's writings. The aim is, first, to build a bridge between the so-called resource theories of power (Weber, Parsons) and the structural approach (Foucault) and, second, to do this in the form of a conception which would be usable on both macro- and micro-levels at the same time. Four theories are discussed: (1) the distributive approach (Weber); (2) the collective approach (Parsons); (3) the structural a… Show more

“…Interpreting what Foucault meant by power can be considered a separate debate in itself, as authors frequently accuse each other of either misunderstanding or neglecting parts of Foucault's work (Aladjam, 1995;Borch, 2005;Garcia, 2001;Heiskala, 2001;Infinito, 2003;Thompson, 2003). This is further complicated by the fact that there seems to be quite some difference and sometimes even contradiction between the 'early Foucault' and the 'later Foucault', and second because at least one of the 'Foucaults' has explicitly emphasized that he does not aim to present a theory nor a model, but rather a 'toolbox' for studying power.…”

“…esim. Heiskala 2001;Seppänen & Väliverronen 2013, 172-175) Resurssiksi miellettynä (Weber 1978, 53;Mills 1956) valta on kykyä saada läpi oma päätös, pitää asioita poissa päätöksenteosta tai hallita ihmisten käsitystä omasta edustaan. Tällöin puhutaan distributiivisesta valtakäsityksestä (Mann 1986, 6).…”
