Theory of constraints: review and bibliometric analysis

Abstract: This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) research i.e. a total of 1009 journal articles published since 1984. From a bibliometric point of view, the state of the art was mapped and research gaps in the scientific literature identified, creating opportunities for future research. The Production area leads in number of publications, and applications in the Process of Ongoing Improvement in general have been receiving less attention from academics. It is also worth noting tha… Show more

“…Looked at more generally, a potentially useful way to interpret our findings is within the context of the theory of constraints [45,46]. The guiding approach of our analysis was to look for those constraints which, if lifted, would have the largest effect on system performance.…”

“…Further to that, Figure 1 shows the corresponding percentage of each philosophy; the highest percentage corresponds to SS (30.19%), and then the LM and L6S follow with 24.53 and 26.42%, respectively. The philosophy with the least number of review papers is the TOC, mostly because it has already been proved to be inefficient to solve multi-constraints problems (Rahman, 1998;Ikeziri et al, 2019). While Figure 1 shows that there is a higher interest for the studying philosophies the past 6 years, the results does not capture in detail the trends, because the articles used for Figure 1 were review papers.…”

“…Throughput logic could help to continuously measure and improve their performance by focusing on those problems 5,19 and make decisions taking into consideration their global impact measured in terms of final enterprises' results. 45 In this research, we try to make a contribution to address what other investigators pointed out as needs to deepen studies regarding the Throughput. Those needs are related to advances in research on calculation of optimal production mix preserving the system's capacity and development of a structured method supporting long-term decisions.…”
