Theory to reality: a few issues in implementing problem-based learning

Abstract: The success of an intervention depends not only upon its theoretical soundness, but also on proper implementation that reflects the guidelines derived from its theoretical conception. Debates surrounding the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) have focused on its theoretical conception and students' learning outcomes, but implementation is seemingly absent from the picture. This paper attempts to describe what research evidence is needed to fill in this missing information and provide a clearer pictu… Show more

“…Despite its roots in higher-level medical education, over the last several decades PBL has spread to the K-12 education environment as educators look for better ways to engage students in the classroom and ultimately increase student achievement [37][38][39]. PBL's constructivist nature was originally designed to replace traditional lecture-based teaching methods in medicine to actively engage students in self-directed and interdisciplinary learning through real-world problem solving [40].…”

“…Although PBL and PjBL are similar, each has unique characteristics (Benoit, 2000;BIE, n.d.;Esch, 1998;Hung, 2011) that distinguish one from the other. Whereas PBL begins with a problem for students to solve or learn about, PjBL begins with an end product or "artifact" in mind.…”

“…PBL can be considered a constructive approach to instruction, emphasizing collaborative and self-directed learning and being supported by flexible teacher scaffolding. 4 Based on the above understanding of PBL mode reform in medical courses, this method is also integrate into pharmaceutical chemistry. Some basic problems and their countermeasures in the teaching reform are discussed.…”
