Therapeutic effect of acupuncture on the outcomes of in vitro fertilization: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Based on an analysis of the studies, acupuncture improves the CPR among women undergoing IVF. When the studies were restricted to Asian or non-Asian area patients, compared with traditional acupuncture and other methods, electrical acupuncture yielded better IVF outcomes. Optimal positive effects could be expected using acupuncture in IVF during COH, especially in Asian area. However, as a limitation of this review, most of the included studies did not mention the number of embryos transferred.

“…[19][20][21] This was in accordance with previous research that suggested that the success of IVF programs was greater with acupuncture therapy, which had begun since the COS stage than only around embryotransfer time. 21 It was proven in this current study that complementary acupuncture therapy performed before and during COS could increase oocyte maturation significantly. Fertilization rates in the verum-EA group were significantly higher than in the sham-EA group (P = 0.03); see…”

“…These results are parallel with previous studies by Cui et al 19 and Li et al, 20 who examined the effect of EA on the oocyte quality of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing IVF, and a study by Chen et al in patients with poor ovarian response (POR) who also underwent IVF. 21 All three studies showed improvements…”

“…Nowadays, numerous systematic reviews have investigated the effects of AA on insomnia [18], postoperative pain [19], and in vitro fertilization [20]. Nevertheless, there was no systematic review specifically focusing on the efficacy of AA for preventing constipation in leukemia patients undergoing chemotherapy.…”

“…Often, infertile women resort to various complementary/supportive practices to cope with stress. Studies have revealed that of these practices, acupuncture increased self‐efficacy; art therapies reduced hopelessness, anxiety, and depressive symptoms; and relaxation techniques affected stress reduction . In addition to these practices, yoga, another complementary/supportive practice, has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing intense stress, depression, and anxiety and in increasing the quality of life of the individual .…”
