Therapeutic Effect of Polidocanol Sclerotherapy on Oral Vascular Malformations

Abstract: Various treatments for oral vascular malformation (VM) have been reported. Polidocanol and absolute ethanol have also been reported for sclerotherapy. However, there are still few reports on the therapeutic effect and dosage of polidocanol sclerotherapy. Therefore, we examined its therapeutic effects on oral VM. There were 17 sites of VMs, with nine patients diagnosed with oral VM at the Department of Dental and Oral Surgery, Tsukuba University Hospital. The medical records were retrospectively investigated to… Show more

“…In 1944, Orbach ( 15 ) reported foam sclerotherapy as an ‘air-block technique’. Compared with conventional liquid sclerosing agents, foam sclerotherapy has been reported to be more effective at low concentrations and in small doses, thus reducing complications and enabling safe and effective treatment ( 4 ). The smaller the foam formed, the more effective the treatment ( 16 ).…”

“…Therefore, sclerotherapy has become a valuable alternative to the surgical resection of VMs in the maxillofacial region ( 3 ). Compared with conventional liquid sclerosing agents, foam sclerotherapy has been reported to be more effective at low concentrations and in small doses, thereby reducing complications and enabling safe and effective treatment ( 4 ). Although there have been some reports ( 5 , 6 ) on the effectiveness of polidocanol sclerotherapy without foam for VMs in the maxillofacial region, to the best of our knowledge, no study to date has evaluated the effectiveness and safety of foam sclerotherapy using only foam polidocanol for VMs in the oral and maxillofacial region.…”

“…11 Several treatment options have been described for these conditions, including conventional surgery with or without adjunctive preoperative embolization, cryosurgery, and drug therapies (e.g., ethanolamine oleate and polidocanol). 5,33,34 However, these therapeutic approaches carry a risk of side effects such as scarring, pain, and bleeding. 5 Current advances in the use of high-power lasers allow oral health professionals to provide effective treatments with minimal side effects.…”

“…Polidocanol is a sclerosing agent that has been used widely in the treatment of varicose veins as well as low-flow venous malformations of the oral cavity. [ 26 , 27 ] It is an alkyl polyglycol ether of lauryl alcohol and was initially developed as a local anaesthetic in 1931. [ 28 ] Mild urticaria is the most general complication reported.…”
