Therapeutic Effects of 6‐Gingerol, 8‐Gingerol, and 10‐Gingerol on Dextran Sulfate Sodium‐Induced Acute Ulcerative Colitis in Rats

Abstract: Ulcerative colitis is one of the most common types of inflammatory bowel disease and is multifactorial and relapsing. 6-Gingerol, a component of gingerols extracted from ginger (Zingiber officinale), has been reported to improve ulcerative colitis. The present study aims to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of two analogous forms of 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol, on ulcerative colitis. Colitis was induced in rats through consumption of 5% (w/v) dextran sulfate sodium drinking water for 7 consecuti… Show more

“…Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), particularly ulcerative colitis, have been long related to increased burden of oxidative stress (Achitei et al, 2013;Koutroubakis et al, 2004;Rezaie, Parker, & Abdollahi, 2007). To this regard, multiple studies revealed that antioxidant/antiinflammatory herbal extracts could be effective in the management of IBDs symptoms, particularly those related to increased oxidative stress (Chung et al, 2007;Lenoir et al, 2012;Ma et al, 2018;Zhang, Ma, Gao, Sun, & Zhang, 2017). In this context, a preliminary preclinical study was performed in order to evaluate protective effects of devil's claw in IBDs.…”

“…Additionally, 6‐shogaol and 10‐gingerol have effective antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties (Dugasani et al, ), which can prevent oxygen free radicals from acting on sulfenyl to degenerate proteins and inactivate enzymes, thus alleviating gastric mucosal damage. Moreover, the aforementioned antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory activities can ameliorate gastrointestinal injury by suppressing the inflammatory cascade reaction (Zhang, Ma, Gao, Sun, & Zhang, ). Currently, there are almost no specific pharmacological researches on 12‐shogaol.…”

“…Ginger, the rhizome of the Zingiber officinale is commonly consumed dietary condiments. Ginger and its constituents show antioxidant activity and prevent the damage of macromolecules, caused by the free radicals/oxidative stress [8]. The compounds derived from natural sources, which are considered to be safe and cost effective, are needed.…”
