Therapeutic efficacy and bioaccumulation of albendazole in the treatment of tambaqui ( Colossoma macropomum ) parasitized by acanthocephalan ( Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae )

Abstract: The therapeutic efficacy of different doses of albendazole (ABZ) in the treatment of infection by acanthocephalan (Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae) in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) was evaluated. The bioaccumulation of ABZ and its main metabolites in the target tissue (muscle plus skin in natural proportions) was also evaluated. The fish received a daily dose of 10, 20 or 30 mg ABZ kg −1 bw via medicated feed for 34 days.Incorporation of ABZ in the fish feed was performed by coating with ethyl cellulose (EC) (0.… Show more

“…Brazilian legislative framework establishes that medicinal pharmaceutical products for veterinary use must be speci cally registered by MAPA, so that they can be prescribed for use in animals. In addition, to register a veterinary drug as antiparasitic, its e cacy must be greater than or equal to 90% (Cordeiro et al 2022). Therefore, the albendazole treatments evaluated in this study achieved the required MAPA e cacy.…”

Since it is widely used around the world, despite it has not yet been regulated for application in fish farming, this anthelmintic has been studied (Cordeiro et al, 2022). However, it has not been assayed to determine its efficacy in controlling monogeneans of P. brachypomus and M. macrocephalus, both fish of great economic importance to aquaculture in Brazil.…”

“…The use of EC in medicated feed containing ABZ was reported for pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus, Holmberg, 1887) (Busatto et al 2017) and tambaqui (Cordeiro et al 2022). However, the effect of coating medicated feed with EC on treatment efficacy and bioaccumulation of ABZ in edible fish tissue through the direct comparison of coated and uncoated feed has not yet been reported, and was thus analyzed in this study using tambaqui naturally parasitized with N. buttnerae.…”
