Therapeutic evaluation of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery versus open thoracotomy for pediatric pulmonary hydatid disease

Abstract: BackgroundHydatid disease is a severe and widespread human cestode infection, and in children, the lung is the most commonly infected organ. In current practice, the standard surgical procedure for the removal of pulmonary hydatid cysts is thoracotomy; therefore, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to treat pediatric pulmonary hydatid disease. To our knowledge, this is the first and large sample comparative study of VATS and thoracotomy for pediatric pulmonary hy… Show more

“…More recently, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery seems to be a good alternative therapeutic method to thoracotomy for pulmonary hydatid disease treatment in children, for selected small patients. 86 Finally, in our experience, perioperative use of albendazole improves the surgical effects of the above techniques, prevents recurrence, and decreases the possibility of serious allergic reactions from hydatid dissemination.…”

“…There have been several concerns with the use of MIS in management of hydatid disease. The main concern is of spillage of the cyst fluid Single lung ventilation has been used by most authors to secure the uninvolved lung [9,12]. The issue of aspiration of cyst contents is taken care by isolation of the affected side by use of bronchial blockage.…”

“… 23 To reduce surgery-related trauma, reducing the duration of the operation and the postoperative period using a bilateral one-stage sequential video-assisted thoracoscopic echinococcectomy from both lungs is effective. 24 , 25 The method of one-stage surgical treatment and 2-stage pulmonary echinococcosis via transmediastinal access to the eliminated right pulmonary echinococcosis and liver, through one skin incision with the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic techniques allows the reduction of trauma and the length of treatment, and patients are relieved to avoid the next-stage operations and repeated anesthesia.…”
