Therapeutic extended reality.

Abstract

Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term that combines several types of constructed reality technologies-virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality-that allow the user to control the level of immersion into virtual environments. Virtual reality (VR) is a completely computer-generated simulated environment in three dimensions with which a person can interacted in a seemingly real and physical way using a specialized set of goggles with a screen inside of it as well as other electronic equipment, such as gloves and sensors. In augmented reality (AR), computer-generated information (e.g., data about a building or a person) is superimposed on the user's view of the real world. Mixed reality (MR) is the merging and coexisting of real-world objects and computer-generated objects for the purposes of interacting in real time. Taken together, these multiple forms of generated realities form a continuum of immersion (see Figure 15.1). These forms of XR are potentially important tools counselors can use to engage both children and adults in therapeutic settings. This chapter addresses the potential therapeutic uses and clinical applications of XR. The chapter concludes with a short case study that illustrates the use of XR with a child.
