Therapeutic Potential of Allicin-Rich Garlic Preparations: Emphasis on Clinical Evidence toward Upcoming Drugs Formulation

Abstract: Garlic has been used for a long time in human history. Allicin, the main active compound present in freshly injured garlic, is enzymatically formed from alliin. Allicin has shown doubtless beneficial effects and even be conceived as medicine. The present review highlights allicin-associated studies. Indeed, clinical studies on healthy subjects have evidenced that standardized garlic treatment (900 mg/day) significantly reduces total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (c-LDL). Besides, all… Show more

“…Allicin supplementation along with tamoxifen treatment to Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells resulted in marked decrease in TNFα levels, showing its beneficial role as an adjuvant ( Arreola et al, 2015 ). In clinical trials evaluating the safety of allicin treatment, no adverse effects were reported ( Sharifi-Rad et al, 2019 ). In HT-29 and Caco-2 cells stimulated with TNFα, allicin brought about a marked inhibition in the secretion of IL-1β, IP10, CXCL8 and MIG in a dose-dependent manner.…”

“…Presence of allicin in garlic and its biological properties were first reported in 1944 and was termed as “heart of garlic” (Salehi et al., 2019). Alliin is an amino acid that is converted into allyl sulfenic acid via the enzyme alliinase when garlic is crushed (Moss & Ramji, 2016; Sharifi‐Rad et al., 2019). Allyl sulfenic acid is an unstable compound and is highly reactive at room temperature.…”

“…This plant has many organosulfur compounds such as allicin, volatile compounds [2]. That reported having extensive pharmacological activities [3] such as antimicrobial [4], antihypertensive, nephroprotective, cardioprotective, antioxidant [5], anti-carcinogenic, antidiabetic, and cytochrome activity [2]. Allicin is known to be unstable and results from the action of the alliinase enzyme in alliin.…”
