Therapeutic potential of coumarins as antiviral agents

Abstract: Coumarins have received a considerable attention in the last three decades as a lead structures for the discovery of orally bioavailable non-peptidic antiviral agents. A lot of structurally diverse coumarins analogues were found to display remarkable array of affinity with the different molecular targets for antiviral agents and slight modifications around the central motif result in pronounced changes in its antiviral spectrum. This manuscript thoroughly reviews the design, discovery and structure-activity re… Show more

“…Phenylpropanoids, including lignins and coumarins, commonly exist in natural plants, and these compounds often have some interesting activities such as antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities (de Souza et al, 2016;Hassan et al, 2016;Figueiredo et al, 2017).…”

“…The spectral characteristics correspond to the literature data. [43] (exo-5,5,6-Trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (7). Resorcinol (1 mmol) and camphene (1 mmol) were placed in a two-necked flask equipped with a thermometer and a condenser.…”

“…The potency of coumarins may be modified by the number of small substituents, such as the hydroxy, alkoxy or carbonyl groups in various positions of coumarin moiety (Abdelhafez et al, 2010;Drzewiecka et al, 2013;Hassan et al, 2016;Paul et al, 2013;Sarkanj et al, 2013;Tsay et al, 2013). One of the latest trends is search for the new anti-psychotic drugs among coumarin derivatives, and their affinities to serotoninergic receptors 5-HT 1A and 5-HT 2A were defined (Chen et al, 2014;Chen et al, 2013).…”
