Abstract:Advanced treatment of ARDS including ECMO represents a therapeutic option if none of the currently considered contraindications are present. An improvement in gas exchange parameters, but not a defined value per se may be useful as a prognostic factor for favourable outcome.
“…When combining the mortality and the 6‐month disability end points, the difference became significant in favour of the ECMO group . However, the study has attracted some criticism why the ‘evidence’ adult ECMO in the treatment of severe ARDS is still largely based on non‐randomised studies published by a number of ECMO centres . Nevertheless, ECMO treatment has a place in clinical practice, as indicated by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation (ELSO) International Registry Report from January 2011, in which the number of adult ECMO treatments more than doubled during the H1N1 pandemic.…”
Patients with severe ARDS have a favourable outcome when treated with ECMO and when an ECMO retrieval team establishes the ECMO treatment at the referring hospital. SAPS-II, SOFA and Murray scores predicted the outcome.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
