Thermal Analysis and Heat Management Strategies for an Induction Motor, a Review

Abstract: Induction motors have gained a renewed interest due to this new shift from conventional power sources to electric power. These motors are known for their high commencing torque, adequate speed control and reasonable overload capacity. However, induction motors have an innate thermal issue wherein their lifespan and performance are strongly temperature dependent. Hence, it is highly essential to focus on the thermal management aspect of these motors to ensure reliability and enhance performance. Thus, the major… Show more

“…Induction motors are the devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. Induction motors offer wider torque range and accurate speed control, provide recharging of battery during breaking, require low maintenance, and have high efficiency [1]. They are also smaller in size when compared with permanent magnet DC (Direct Current) motors and are less expensive, Figure 1.…”

“…The induction motors utilized in cars require high load capacity. When these motors operate at higher speeds, they generate heat which results in an increase in losses such as copper and iron loss, thereby increasing the temperature in the rotor and stator of the motor [1]. With the increase in temperature, various parts of the induction motor could experience phase change, softening, melting, and other forms of degradation that will affect the performance of the motor.…”

“…Spindle thermal deformation caused by the error is often small, but the impact on the machining accuracy is prominent, and in serious cases, even causes damage to the spindle. Therefore, it is especially critical to provide efficient heat evacuation and address the thermal contortion of the motor spindle caused by temperature increase [4][5][6][7][8].…”
