Thermal and cardiovascular strain imposed by motorcycle protective clothing under Australian summer conditions

Abstract: Motorcycle protective clothing can be uncomfortably hot during summer, and this experiment was designed to evaluate the physiological significance of that burden. Twelve males participated in four, 90-min trials (cycling 30 W) across three environments (25, 30, 35 °C [all 40% relative humidity]). Clothing was modified between full and minimal injury protection. Both ensembles were tested at 25 °C, with only the more protective ensemble investigated at 30 and 35 °C. At 35 °C, auditory canal temperature rose at… Show more

“…When studied in temperate (258 C) and warm conditions (308 C) at that external work rate (30 W), this expectation was realized (N = 12; Ref. 13). However, in the heat (358 C, water vapor pressure 2.3 kPa, 40% RH), significant thermal loading was observed with the thresholds for moderate (.38.58 C) and profound hyperthermia (.40.08 C) predicted to occur within 105 and 180 minutes, respectively.…”

“…Also, the examination towards physiological strain at the temperature 35°C needs to be done. 55 Hence to design and develop clothing that could give more thermal regulation during hot climatic conditions and comfort to the wearer is very much required. The tests should be done to analyze the thermal balance of the bike rider’s protective clothing.…”

“…More than a quarter of garments fail under crash conditions . Many garments impose significant thermal strain in summer conditions and may compromise safety through impaired functioning and fatigue (de Rome et al, 2015;de Rome, 2019). Moreover, thermal discomfort leads many riders to choose to ride unprotected.…”
