Thermal and optical properties of La2O3–Ga2O3– (Nb2O5 or Ta2O5) ternary glasses

Abstract: La 2 O 3 -Ga 2 O 3 -M 2 O 5 (M = Nb or Ta) ternary glasses were fabricated using an aerodynamic levitation technique, and their glass-forming regions and thermal and optical properties were investigated. Incorporation of adequate amounts of Nb 2 O 5 and Ta 2 O 5 drastically improved the thermal stabilities of the glasses against crystallization. Optical transmittance measurements revealed that all the glasses were transparent over a wide wavelength range from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. The refractive… Show more

“…However, TiO 2 ‐based glasses without any conventional network‐former can only be prepared by containerless processing due to their poor glass‐forming abilities 6−8 . To date, TiO 2 ‐based, Nb 2 O 5 ‐based, 9−11 Al 2 O 3 ‐based, 12−14 and Ga 2 O 3 ‐based 15−17 glasses have been vitrified by containerless processing technique. Arai et al 18 synthesized a La 4 Ti 9 O 24 glass, which exhibited a high refractive index of 2.231 at 1313 nm.…”

“…The he structural analysis and crystallization of the resulting glasses have been studied in recent years. [25][26][27] Such non-conventional glasses are generally melted by a CO 2 laser by floating the raw powder with gas. Instead of vitrification by ultra-fast cooling, the glass is obtained by avoiding contact between the glass melt and the container during melting to avoid inhomogeneous nucleation.…”

“…Non‐conventional glasses with few glass‐forming oxides such as SiO 2 , P 2 O 5 , and B 2 O 3 have been synthesized by laser melting. The he structural analysis and crystallization of the resulting glasses have been studied in recent years 25–27 . Such non‐conventional glasses are generally melted by a CO 2 laser by floating the raw powder with gas.…”

“…As one of containerless processing methods, aerodynamic levitation has been used to prepare some types of novel glasses successfully [15,16]. Moreover, new glass materials containing Nb 2 O 5 prepared by aerodynamic levitation method are began to be researched in the view of optical properties, luminescence, etc [17][18][19].…”
