Thermal Comfort and its Relation to Ventilation Approaches in Non-Air-Conditioned Mosque Buildings

Abstract: This paper reports the outcome of a thermal comfort study that assessed the satisfaction of occupants with their surrounding thermal conditions. The study was carried out in 10 mosque buildings around lowland Nibong Tebal, Penang and highland Cameron Highlands, Pahang. It involved determining the compliance level of thermal comfort parameters (i.e. air temperature, relative humidity and air speed) at lowland and highland and establishing relationships between ventilation systems with predicted mean vote and pr… Show more

“…The need for the HVAC system is therefore important because, compared to the other stages, this period is much longer in duration and the levels of comfort necessary for human health and work efficiency need to be provided at this stage (Yüksek and Karadayi, 2017). Rasli et al (2019) add that although HVAC systems play a vital role in assuring occupant comfort, nonetheless, they are among the biggest energy consumers in buildings. Gatea et al (2020) opine that as most people spend quite 90% of their time indoors, the development of energy efficient HVAC systems would play a significant role in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.…”

“…According to the standard of the "ISO-7730", thermal comfort is a "condition of mind, which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment" [1,2]. Thermal comfort is related to the perception of a subject living in any thermal environment, which is related to many of factors; therefore, it is a bit complicated to guess and define correctly [3].…”
