Thermal Comfort and Occupant Satisfaction of a Mosque in a Hot and Humid Climate

Abstract: Mosques are distinguished from other types of buildings by having an intermittent operation schedule. They are partially or fully occupied five times a day and the maximum occupancy is expected to occur on Friday prayers. As buildings with intermittent occupancy may not perform the same thermally as typical commercial and residential facilities, thermal comfort conditions and perception of occupants have to be investigated. This paper presents the results of a study monitoring indoor environmental conditions o… Show more

“…However, the prediction accuracy of PMV and PPD indices has been questioned by many researchers since the PMV-PPD model recommends that a narrow temperature range to be applied equally across all building types, climatic zones, and population. The studies conducted in hot and humid climatic conditions proved that the PMV-PPD model tends to overpredict the perceived warmth in the built environment (Appah-Dankyi and Koranteng 2012;Dias et al, 2014;Calis et al 2015;Calis and Kuru 2017). Furthermore, it is stated that the PMV-PPD model cannot predict thermal complaints in every building typology.…”

“…As required, muslims attend the prayer service in modest, clean, and nice clothes; they wear loose fitting clothes, long sleeves, socks and headscarfs, the overall average clothing insulation value appropriate to be considered being 0.53 clo, found considering the clothes assembles references from ISO -7730 (2005) as in [4], [5], [6].…”

“…Mosque or masjid in Arabic is a place of worship where Muslims come to do their congregational prayer since the formation of Islam in 622 CE. Besides being a place of worship, a mosque is also considered a public space used by Muslims for activities such as daily praying, Quran recitation, and Friday prayer and its lecture [1][2][3][4]. These activities involve a lot of speeches, so the praying hall needs to be acoustically satisfactory and comfortable.…”
