Thermal Comfort in NZEB Collective Housing in Northern Spain

Abstract: European Building Codes have transitioned towards Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) requirements in new constructions, demanding high levels of insulation and airtightness derived from research and standards developed in Northern and Central Europe. The use of these principles in Southern Europe, where solar radiation is greater and building typologies and user behaviour are different, may have had a negative impact in Thermal Comfort and Energy Demand and Consumption. In this study, six dwellings located in a 2… Show more

“…In any case, a new concept of housing with strong social implications is regulated: temporary housing, reduced in size. This reduced size is associated with a series of risks, such as overcrowding and the previously studied overheating [58,59]. Although this is a problem that is difficult to evaluate from an architectural point of view alone, it is clear that it is easier for a small dwelling to suffer from this problem than a large one.…”

“…In its most elemental form, the state of the art related to housing studies shows trends that are easy to identify in relation to specific key issues. On the one hand, there is abundant research that relates housing and sustainability (both social and ecological) [1][2][3]. In this regard, both the contextual conditions and the specificity of the constructive means are analyzed in contemporary academic circles, linking the qualitative circumstances of sustainable ecosystems with the qualities of the habitat [4,5].…”
