Thermal Conductivity of Thermally Insulated Concretes in a Nuclear Safety Vessel of Reactor Vault: Experimental Interpretation

Abstract: Thermally insulated concretes are a type of alternative building material that helps improve thermal efficiency in nuclear reactor vault safety vessel applications. The experimental results of thermal conductivity values of lightweight concrete materials at various temperatures are presented in this paper. To minimize heat conduction in concrete, different lightweight aggregates and vermiculite are employed as coarse aggregate alternatives. Both linear and plane heat source approaches are used to calculate the … Show more

“…Some of the current materials include concrete and yttria-stabilized zirconia materials, among others, but their applications are limited by their large size, manufacturability, and high thermal conductivity. [1][2][3] Bismuth borate (Bi 4 B 2 O 9 ) is the 2:1 binary compound formed in the Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 system. Bi 4 B 2 O 9 as one of the borate materials is gaining attention for its low thermal expansion, 4 excellent neutron and gamma-ray shielding ability, 5 good microwave dielectric properties 6 and good optical properties.…”

“…Manufacturability and low thermal conductivity are important criteria in determining the safety of the insulation structure, considering its size as well as its insulation efficiency. Some of the current materials include concrete and yttria‐stabilized zirconia materials, among others, but their applications are limited by their large size, manufacturability, and high thermal conductivity 1–3 …”

“…Especially when different concretes and constituent materials are involved in this testing. It is known that concrete behavior is highly related to its composition [45], particularly the presence of different fibers, which can also influence the accuracy of NDT measurements in assessing concrete deterioration under fire. Although, some researchers have considered comparing the NDT at various temperatures [24,39], the effect of the presence of fibers in FRCs on the presented comparison was not studied.…”
