Thermal Diffusivity of H2O Near the Critical Point

Abstract: The asymptotic critical behavior of the thermal diffusivity of H 2 O, deduced from dynamic light-scattering measurements, is shown to be in good agreement with the mode-coupling theory for critical dynamics in fluids. Consistency of the thermal-diffusivity measurements with the critical enhancement of the viscosity of H 2 O is also demonstrated.

“…8. Note that here, for the case of soft-sphere fluids, we observed similar D T (n) dependence as it was known for real supercritical fluids [42] and were reported in studies of critical behavior of thermal diffusivity D T of CO 2 , C 2 H 6 [43], and H 2 O [44]. Interestingly, both density dependencies D T (n) and D L (n) for soft-sphere fluids have minima right in the region of the smallest PSD, at the density n * ∼ 0.37 (see Fig.…”

“…For realistic fluids, the critical behavior of thermal diffusivity D T = λ nC P depends on the divergence of thermal conductivity λ and specific heat at constant pressure C P at the critical point [45]. The experiments [43,44] give evidence of a rapid decay of D T on approaching the critical point, i.e., leading contribution from the C P and, consequently, the line of the minimum of D T (n) for realistic fluids should be very close to their Widom line. This makes a strong argument in connecting the dynamic crossover in systems with and without coexistence gas-liquid binodal.…”

“…Their density dependences were obtained qualitatively similar with a minimum right at the density where the vanishing PSD was observed. For the soft sphere fluids was obtained similar density dependence of D T as it was known for real supercritical fluids [51] and were reported in studies of critical behaviour of thermal diffusivity D T of CO 2 , C 2 H 6 [60] and H 2 O [61]. Both quantities D T and D L define the behaviour of the PSD as it follows from the analytical expression reported in 4.25.…”
