Positive Energy Building Definition with the Framework, Elements and Challenges of the Concept

Buildings account for 36% of the final energy demand and 39% of CO2 emissions worldwide. Targets for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and reducing building related emissions is an important part of the energy policy to reach the Paris agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. While nearly zero energy buildings are the new norm in the EU, the research is advancing towards positive energy buildings, which contribute to the surrounding community by providing emission-free energy. This paper suggests a definition for positive energy building and presents the framework, elements, and challenges of the concept. In a positive energy building, the annual renewable energy production in the building site exceeds the energy demand of the building. This increases two-way interactions with energy grids, requiring a broader approach compared to zero energy buildings. The role of energy flexibility grows when the share of fluctuating renewable energy increases. The presented framework is designed with balancing two important perspectives: technical and user-centric approaches. It can be accommodated to different operational conditions, regulations, and climates. Potential challenges and opportunities are also discussed, such as the present issues in the building’s balancing boundary, electric vehicle integration, and smart readiness indicators.

This paper presents a numerical model for thermal energy storage systems’ design, development, and feasibility. The energy storage was composed of a tank that stores phase change material (AlSi12) and internal pipes with heat transfer fluid (Cerrolow 117), coupled to a power block to dispatch electrical energy on a small scale for off-grid industrial applications. Subsequently, the evolution of the temperature in charge/discharge cycles, temperature degradation, and storage efficiency was determined with the appropriate magnitudes and behavior through the resolution of a numerical model. In addition, for the proposed electric power generation plant for an off-grid pumping system in the mining industry of Chile, a numerical model was developed using the finite volumes method to simulate the thermocline performance. As a result, the temperature history reflects stable thermal behavior, low degradation, and high efficiency of approximately 92%, with a storage time increasing up to 13 [h] and 384.8 [kWh] capacity. Also, implementation was feasible on a small scale due to its compact, modular, and economically competitive characteristics in a concentrated solar power plant. Finally, the proposed design was proven to be an accurate and reliable alternative for small-scale off-grid mining applications.

The intermittence of solar energy resource in concentrated solar power (CSP) generation and solar drying applications can be mitigated by employing thermal energy storage materials. Natural rocks are well recommended thermal energy storage materials as they are efficient for CSP generation. This study explores the potential of soapstone rock and also the influence of the sites' geo-tectonic setting to soapstone and granite rocks as thermal energy storage materials. Experimental characterization was done to investigate the thermo-chemical properties (thermal stability (TGA), crystalline phases (XRD), petrographic imaging and chemical composition (XRF), and high temperature test); the thermo-physical properties (density, porosity, specific and thermal capacity (DSC), thermal diffusivity, and conductivities (LFA)); and the thermo-mechanical properties (Young's modulus) of the rocks. Consequently, the rock with the most desired properties for thermal energy storage was the soapstone rock from the Craton geotectonic setting and it had a Young's modulus of 135 GPa at room temperature. At solar drying and CSP temperatures it had thermal capacities of 3.28 MJ/(m 3 •K) and 4.65 MJ/(m 3 •K); densities of 2.785 g/cm 3 and 2.77 g/cm 3 ; and conductivities of 2.56 W/(m•K) and 2.43 W/(m•K) respectively, and had weight loss of 0.75% at 900 °C. At high temperatures, only granite from Craton had visible cracks while the other 3 rocks did not show visible signs of fracture. Conclusively, soapstone and granite from Craton in the Dodoma region and Usagaran in the Iringa geo-tectonic settings exhibit significant differences in most thermo-properties.
