“…They found that thermal hydrolysis resulted in a breakdown of between 5% and 20% of the compounds due to thermal instability. However, when the additional impacts of digestion were accounted for, no statistical difference was noticed in the breakdown of the compounds between the control and test configurations for almost all the compounds tested (Taboada-Santos et al, 2019). Only NPX was totally removed, and it was removed from both test and control reactors.…”

“…In a later work, Taboada-Santos et al (2019) studied the fate of a wide variety of xenobiotics which had been processed by thermal hydrolysis (at 170°C for 20 min) and subsequent mesophilic anaerobic digestion (MAD). Eighteen compounds were studied including: three musk fragrances, galaxolide (HHCB), tonalide (AHTN) and celestolide (ADBI); three anti-inflammatories, ibuprofen (IBP), naproxen (NPX) and diclofenac (DCF); four antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX), trimethoprim (TMP), erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX); four neurodrugs, fluoxetine (FLX), carbamazepine (CBZ), diazepam (DZP) and citalopram (CTL); one endocrine disrupting compound, triclosan (TCS) and three hormones, estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) (Taboada-Santos et al, 2019). The authors looked at destruction both across thermal hydrolysis itself and after digestion.…”

“…The main purpose of the sewage sludge treatment is to remove the pathogenic microorganisms so that it can be safely treated as substrate (usually fertiliser), landfilled or stored (Świerczek et al 2018 ). The overall efficiency of this hygienisation for the AD, THP and EB is 99% (2 log reduction), 99.99% (4 log reduction) and > 5 log reduction for 10 kGy EB, respectively (Chmielewski et al 1995 ; Chmielewski and Sudlitz 2019 ; Levantesi et al 2015 ; Mills 2015 ; Taboada-Santos et al 2019 ).…”

“…TCS was used as an indicator for the efficacy of aerobic and anaerobic digestion in removing antimicrobials with aerobic digestion proving to be more effective (555 ng/g TCS remaining after treatment) than anaerobic digestion (22,700 ng/g remaining) (Guerra et al, 2019). Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment prior to anaerobic digestion was shown to have an impact on the removal of organic micropollutants in that it improved the removal in the dissolved fraction, but did not affect the concentration of them in the solids that are not solubilized (Tab oada‐Santos, Braz, Fernandez‐Gonzalez, Carballa, & Lema, 2019).…”
