The physical and physicochemical properties of thermal muds (peloids) from 20 spas in Turkey were defined and compared with those of naturally pure clay minerals, smectite, illite, sepiolite, and kaolinite, to define the suitability of their use in pastes, masks, creams, and/or mud baths. The liquid and plastic limit values of the peloids show medium to high plasticity. The values of the pure clay minerals vary from 110 to 369 and 60 to 130, respectively, being higher than those of the peloid samples except for illite and kaolinite. The peloid samples show very soft, soft, semihard, hard, and fluid properties according to the consistency index. The CEC values of the peloids vary from 10.11 to 36.01 meq/100 g. The abrasivity of the peloids and clay minerals ranges from 0.58 to 3.12 mg/m 2 and 0.05 to 0.37 mg/m 2 , respectively. The viscosity values of the peloid samples are variable and the thixotropic values are considerably higher in some peloid samples. In the pure clay minerals, sepiolite shows high values. The oil absorption capacity of sepiolite is higher than that of the other clay minerals. The peloids with high CEC, swelling, and absorption capacity may be suitable for the removal of oils, toxins, and contaminants from the skin.

SANTRAUKAReikšminiai žodžiai: balneoterapija, geoterminis vanduo, integratyvi medicina, mineralinis vanduo. Pasaulinė sveikatos organizacija pripažįsta terapinį domėjimąsi terminiais ar neterminiais gydomaisiais mineraliniais vandenimis. Mineralinis vanduo gali būti gaunamas iš natūralių šaltinių ir dirbtinių gilių vandens gręžinių. Tikslas. Įvertinti istorinį ir moksliškai pagrįstą balneoterapijos poveikį įvairioms organizmo būklėms bei apžvelgti balneoterapijos ir geoterminio vandens panaudojimo perspektyvas. Metodai. Atlikta bibliografinė balneoterapijos istorijos, poveikio, klinikinių tyrimų, geoterminio vandens šaltinių straipsnių analizė "SpringerLink", "Academic Search Complete", "Wiley Online Library", "PubMed", "Medline", "ScienceDirect", DOAJ, BMJ, "Sage journals Online" bei kitose duomenų bazėse iki 2013 metų. Rezultatai. Archeologiniai radiniai patvirtina, kad mineralinio vandens procedūros žmogaus gydymui ir relaksacijai buvo naudojamos nuo Bronzos amžiaus. Balneoterapijos tyrimai atliekami keletą dešimtmečių, ypač Europoje ir Azijoje, dažniau-siai naudojant vidutinės ir aukštos mineralizacijos vandenį iš natūralių šaltinių, skiriant įvairioms indikacijoms skirtingomis metodikomis. Įrodyta, kad vandens terapija teigiamai veikia visuomenės sveikatą, širdies-kraujagyslių, kaulų-raumenų, endokrininę, nervų ir kitas sistemas. Bendrai balneoterapija ar spa terapija yra gerai toleruojama ir vidutiniškai efektyvi mažinant įvairius simptomus. Dėl aukštos temperatūros ir didelės mineralizacijos stiprinant sveikatą gali būti naudingas geoterminis vanduo. Numatoma pasaulinės sveikatos organizacijos strategija: integruojant tradicinę mediciną/papildomą mediciną į nacionalines sveikatos sistemas, atitinkamai padidinti potencialų jų įnašą į sveikatos ir sveikatos apsaugos, sveikatos kapitalo, socialinės integracijos ir dalyvavimo, tvarios gerovės visiems ir sveikatos institucijų pasitikėjimo sritis. Išvados. Balneoterapija turi ilgą taikymo ir tyrinėjimo įvairioms būklėms istoriją, liudijančią apie efektyvumą ir saugumą. Nors aukštos kokybės įrodymais grįstas išvadas padaryti sunku (kaip ir visų natūralių terapijų), dažnesnis balneoterapijos taikymas integratyvioje medicinoje, panaudojant ir geoterminio vandens potencialą, galėtų būti naudingas kiekvieno individo sveikatai, didinti visuomenės darbingumą; balneoterapija galėtų būti pripažinta pirminės ir antrinės profilaktikos terapinės programos dalimi. The area around the Euganean Hills (North-East Italy) is concerned with thermal phenomena known and used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times. The thermal waters collected in this area have taken up a natural radionuclides content due to the leaching of hot and permeable deep rocks, with which they come into contact, before their rising to the surface. During the "maturation" process of the mud used for treatment purposes, the thermal waters make happen a complex series of biochemical changes and release a series of chemical species to the mud, resulting, in particular, in an enrichment phenomenon for some radionuclides. In this work, the first radiochemical analysis extended to all the Euganean Thermal District is reported. In particular, chemical analyses of mud, as well as radiochemical analyses of both mud and waters were performed; the enrichment of the radioisotopes in mud used for treatments was also documented. The results show that the 226 Ra content in mud, during the "maturation" process, presents an enrichment even of one order of magnitude with respect to the value found in the unprocessed mud. Furthermore, in the same thermal waters, high concentrations of "unsupported"222 Rn have been found, which have shown to be not completely negligible both for people under treatment and particularly for spa workers. *
