Thermal Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate at High Temperature

Abstract: Kinetic studies of the bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate at high temperature have been carried out first without any additives and then in the presence of 1-Butanethiol as a chain transfer agent. A pressurised dilatometric reactor operating at high temperature is used to determine the time-conversion curves at temperatures between 150 and 180°C. A two-stage polymerization is observed. The high polymerization rate obtained initially is attributed to traces of an initiating impurity, while the second, s… Show more

“…The mechanism of this kind of initiation is unsolved until now and still under investigation: Fenouillot et al [2] explained their observations by impurities that are introduced together with chain transfer agents or other reagents that decompose to radicals. Other authors [3,4] suspected peroxide containing species formed from monomer and physically dissolved molecular oxygen (in monomer and solvents) to be responsible for this Summary: Several researches have dealt with the thermal initiation of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the past.…”

“…When the temperature decreases the gel effect is more pronounced and the initiator is more effective as it is less burnt out, the result is a higher conversion. This trend was also observed in the batch reactor 10, 11. These operating conditions are not comfortable because at low temperature and consequently high conversion, the viscosity of the medium increases and it becomes difficult to maintain the agitation because of the limited torque of the motor.…”

“…The bulk polymerization of MMA is run at elevated temperature (120–180°C) and initiated by DTBP; BSH is used to control the molecular weight. We have detailed the kinetics of this reaction system in previous studies10, 11 showing that some particularities must be taken into account for above T g polymerization. The monomer used in the batch reactor to establish the kinetics11 and to run this continuous reactor is distillated with the same procedure, except that in the case of the continuous reactor, the monomer is stored and transported under an inert gas.…”
