Thermal Properties of Methyl Ester-Containing Poly(2-oxazoline)s

Abstract: This paper describes the synthesis and thermal properties in solution and bulk of poly(2-alkyl-oxazoline)s (PAOx) containing a methyl ester side chain.Homopolymers of 2-methoxycarbonylethyl-2-oxazoline (MestOx) and 2-methoxycarbonylpropyl-2-oxazoline (C3MestOx), as well as copolymers with 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline (EtOx) and 2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline (nPropOx), with systematic variations in composition were prepared. The investigation of the solution properties of these polymers revealed that the cloud point temperatur… Show more

“…It is well established that POx exhibit a good thermal stability (onset temperature of major mass loss T d > 300 °C) comparable with other water soluble, organic polymers used for drug delivery (T d = 210 °C [γ‐polyglutamic acid]; 330 °C [polyethylene glycol]). The T d of the homopolymers comprising C9‐side chains was above 350 °C (Figure S23a, Supporting Information, Table ).…”

“…Copolymers of PEtOx, PnPrOx, PC2MestOx and PC3MestOx were also shown to have tunable T cp values in between 25°C and 100°C. 57 Interestingly, copolymers of PEtOx and PC3MestOx revealed a linear relationship between composition and T cp while copolymers of PnPrOx and PC2MestOx cover exactly the same range of T cp values, but with a strong non-linear correlation. This difference in behavior is not yet understood, but may be related to the size of the side chains and their exposure to the aqueous phase.…”

“…46,55 Poly(2-oxazoline)s with methyl ester side chains were first reported by Litt in 1968, 56 but it was only reported in 2015 by Hoogenboom that such polymers exhibit thermoresponsive LCST behavior in aqueous solution. 57 In fact, poly(2-methoxycarbonylethyl-2-oxazoline) (PC2MestOx; Fig. 2) has very similar solution behavior as PEtOx with a T cp around 100°C for a polymer with DP 100 while poly(2-methoxycarbonylpropyl-2oxazoline) (PC3MestOx; Fig.…”

“…In contrast to P i ‐PrOx the phase transitions of the amorphous P n ‐PrOx and P c ‐PrOx are fully reversible, even when kept above T CP for a prolonged time. PAOx with methyl ester side‐chains were first reported in 1968, but it was only recently reported that these polymers exhibit thermoresponsive LCST behavior in aqueous solution . Their T CP values depend strongly on the length of the alkyl spacer.…”

“…PAOx with methyl ester side-chains were first reported in 1968, 38 but it was only recently reported that these polymers exhibit thermoresponsive LCST behavior in aqueous solution. 142 Their T CP values depend strongly on the length of the alkyl spacer. PC2MestOx shows a very similar solution behavior to PEtOx with a T CP around 100 ∘ C for a polymer with degree of polymerization 100 while PC3MestOx exhibits a T CP around 25 ∘ C similar to Pn-PrOx.…”
