Thermal properties of pitch-polymer compositions and derived activated carbons

Abstract: The evaluation of the possibilities to use coaltar pitch modified with waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) or phenol-formaldehyde resin for the preparation of activated carbons was carried out. The measurement of thermal analysis (DSC), softening point, coking value, content of components insoluble in toluene and quinoline of pitchpolymer compositions were carried out. Coal-tar pitch and pitch-polymer compositions were carbonized and activated with steam at 800°C to 50 % burn-off. For the obtained activated car… Show more

“…Obtaining of activated carbons of specific physicochemical properties needs the application of specific parameters of thermal treatment [32][33][34]. A method very useful for optimisation of activated carbons production and establishing thermal stability of the activation products is the thermogravimetric analysis [35,36].…”

“…Amounts of resin added to pitch were chosen based on previous tests [11]. Minimum 25% of phenol-formaldehyde resin by mass added to the pitch caused distinct changes in main physical and chemical properties in relation to unmodified pitch [11,12]. Physical and chemical properties of the coal-tar pitch and pitch-phenol-formaldehyde resin composition are shown in Table 1.…”

“…Modification of coal-tar pitch with unsaturated polyester resins leads to considerable plasticization, and such modified bitumens of significantly lower cancerogenicity can be used as binders with insulating and sealing properties. The coal-tar pitch with the addition of poly (ethylene terephthalate) or polycarbonate is characterized by increased thermal and mechanical resistance [10], and it can be used as a promotor of porous materials of great specific surface [11][12][13]. Thermal factor played a decisive role in all examinations.…”

“…Recently taken studies on the use of pitch-polymer compositions for the production of porous materials [4][5][6]. Modification of coal tar pitch with polymers influences also significantly its group components and properties.…”
