Thermal Property Analysis of Axle Load Sensors for Weighing Vehicles in Weigh-in-Motion System

Abstract: Systems which permit the weighing of vehicles in motion are called dynamic Weigh-in-Motion scales. In such systems, axle load sensors are embedded in the pavement. Among the influencing factors that negatively affect weighing accuracy is the pavement temperature. This paper presents a detailed analysis of this phenomenon and describes the properties of polymer, quartz and bending plate load sensors. The studies were conducted in two ways: at roadside Weigh-in-Motion sites and at a laboratory using a climate ch… Show more

“…The values of horizontal stresses are comparable to vertical stresses but they are more sensitive to temperature and speed variations than vertical stresses. Horizontal stresses can impact measurements of the wheel load in the WIM sensor, which was confirmed in field observations [ 5 , 27 ]. The mechanism of an error occurring is analogous to the error caused by vertical stresses.…”

“…A model of this relationship was first introduced by Burnos in 2008 [ 27 ] and further investigated in [ 28 ]. In the latest paper [ 5 ], Burnos and Gajda presented a detailed analysis of the thermal properties of axle load sensors mounted in the pavement. We conclude that the pavement temperature is a significant influencing factor of weighing result accuracy and this phenomenon concerns all examined sensors: polymer, quartz and bending plates.…”

“…Widely utilized WIM sensors for pavements include bending plates [6][7][8], load cells [1,9], capacitive mats [10,11], and strip sensors [12,13], used to extract the total weight, speed, and axle count of vehicles. Bridge weigh-in-motion (BWIM) is a specialized WIM method, where loading characteristics are derived from a bridge's response.…”

“…The climate conditions in which WIM systems operate are subject to change both on a daily scale and over the course of the seasons [19][20][21]. We discovered that the factors which most impact the precision of weighing in WIM systems are pavement quality and temperature, vehicle speed, wind speed and direction, and the state of the vehicle's suspension [16,17,22]. The subject of previous research of the authors was primarily the influence of temperature and speed.…”
