Thermal stability and spectroscopic studies of zemkorite: A carbonate from the Venkatampalle kimberlite of southern India

Abstract: While characterizing the mineralogy of the kimberlite at Venkatampalle, Andhra Pradesh, India (Lat. 14 56' 00" N, Long. 77 22' 15" E), we found the second occurrence of zemkorite (Na,K) 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 , which was first reported in 1989 in the Udachnaya kimberlite in Siberia. We also report the first Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR), scanning electron microscopic, thermo-gravimetric, and high-temperature heat capacity measurements on this rare carbonate. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns sho… Show more

“…An alternative method of formation by lower-temperature alteration is not consistent with preservation in high-temperature igneous phenocrysts. It should also be noted that alkali carbonatite may easily transform into Ca-carbonatite, preserving a magmatic texture [22,36]. The best example of this is "former" natrocarbonatites (now calcitic carbonatite) from the Kerimasi volcano, where primary Na-Ca-carbonates are fully transformed into calcite, but relics of nyerereite (with partial replacement by calcite) were preserved as solid inclusions in magnetite [36].…”

Based on the examples of Oldoinyo Lengai and Kerimasi, we can suggest that the groundmass of the Vallone Toppo del Lupo carbonatite may have an initially natrocarbonatite composition.…”

“…High temperature differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric studies (TG) were performed in order to determine the nature of volatile components present in (Parthasarathy et al 2002). Results of DTA/TG analysis carried out on 5 samples are shown in Fig.…”

“…) are common accessory minerals in terrestrial metamorphic and igneous rocks, and are especially abundant in the high-Ti environment of the lunar crust (Haggerty 1976). Minerals with intermediate compositions of ilmenite-geikielite solid solution are also known to occur as accessory minerals in kimberlites, with geikielite content ranging from 3 to 70 mol% (Haggerty 1976;Parthasarathy et al 2002). Geikielite also occurs as inclusions in spinel group minerals formed by exsolution in metasomatic veins of the Bergell contact aureole (Italy) and in granulite facies marbles of Southern India (Reusser et al 2001).…”
