Thermal stability for the effective use of commercial catalase

Abstract: Catalase with the commercial catalase name Terminox Ultra is widely used in the textile industry in bleaching processes. This enzyme is used to catalyse the decomposition of residual hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. In this study catalase was kept for about 30 hours in water baths in a temperature range from 35 to 70°C. For the first time, the kinetics of thermal deactivation of this enzyme was examined using an oxygen electrode. Stability of the enzyme depends strongly on temperature and its half-life… Show more

“…Shrimp shell chitosan powder with an average molecular weight of 10 7 g mol −1 was obtained from Primex (Iceland), and further deacetylated using hot sodium hydroxide [ 67 ] to a degree of deacetylation (DD) of 89%, measured by titration. Terminox Ultra 50L catalase (TU‐CAT), a liquid product containing fungal Scytalidium thermophilum catalase [ 47,68 ] was received from Novozymes A/S (Bagsvaerd, Denmark) and used as supplied. Glacial acetic acid, sodium acetate, and 35% hydrogen peroxide solution were purchased from Fisher Scientific (Hampton, NH, USA).…”

“…The present work introduces a straightforward approach for enzyme immobilization by coating chitosan entrapped catalase onto cellulosic yarn resulting in a sustainable biocatalytic textile that is capable of simultaneous liquid transport and catalytic reaction. As a readily available, ultra‐fast enzyme (turnover frequency of 1 to 4 × 10 7 s −1 )[ 46 ] that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to form water and oxygen (2H 2 O 2 ↔ H 2 O + O 2 ) at moderate temperatures, [ 47 ] catalase (E.C. 1.11.1.6) is a useful model for exploring the performance of controlled liquid flow biocatalytic yarn systems in which mass transfer occurs among three reaction phases: immobilized enzyme (solid), dissolved hydrogen peroxide substrate (liquid), and evolved oxygen product (gas).…”

“…Therefore, the estimated E r and E d parameters can be used in the design and modeling of the biotransformation process when using an enzyme membrane with horseradish peroxidase. In the literature, fixed bed flow bioreactors were analyzed [32], in which the value of deactivation energy E d obtained in a classical reactor study [33] was used.…”
