Thermal Stability of RP-2 as a Function of Composition: The Effect of Linear, Branched, and Cyclic Alkanes

Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify compositional changes that could improve the thermal stability of the kerosene rocket propellant known as RP-2. For this study, we probed the effect of different types of alkanes on the thermal stability of RP-2. The proportion of linear, branched, or cyclic alkanes was increased by mixing RP-2 with one of the following alkanes (25% by mass): n-dodecane, n-tetradecane, 4-methyldodecane, 2,6,10-trimethyldodecane, or 1,3,5-triisopropylcyclohexane. These mixtures were th… Show more

“…1 wt % heavy components. Conversion was defined as the mass decrease of the THTCPD part relative to the mass of the original THTCPD part and calculated by the following equation: , ,, where m 0 is the mass of feed fuel, m 1 is the mass of liquid residual, and w 0 i and w 1 i are the corresponding mass fractions of component i in the THTCPD part.…”

“…The results can be explained from the following aspects. Cycloalkanes are usually more stable than corresponding linear alkanes due to the expected high stability of cyclohexane rings . So, n -dodecane is less stable than the cyclic alkanes.…”

“…Cycloalkanes are usually more stable than corresponding linear alkanes due to the expected high stability of cyclohexane rings. 24 So, n-dodecane is less stable than the cyclic alkanes. The C−C bond connecting the two cyclohexyl rings in bicyclohexyl molecule is easily broken, while the C−C bond in the rings of decalin is relatively stable.…”
