Thermally degradable maleimides for reworkable adhesives

Abstract: New thermosetting materials were developed for reworkable adhesive applications by introducing acetal ester groups as thermally degradable linkages into maleimide compounds. The synthesis of compounds containing maleimide functionality and acetal ester linkages was conducted by a one‐step neat reaction from commercially available materials. The polymerization process and thermal degradation of the synthesized materials were studied. It was found that the acetal ester linkage degraded rapidly above 225 °C, and … Show more

“…The hydroxyl groups on HEA were then used to ring-open L-lactide before the RAFT end group was used to chain extend another arm. Combining different polymerization techniques, such as ROP, 346 ATRP [347][348][349][350] or SET, 351 with RAFT has facilitated the synthesis of different star polymers. 347,350 For example, Kizhakkedathu and coworkers 347 synthesized a multifunctional initiator obtained from hyperbranched polyglycerol, bearing an ATRP initiator and azo-initiator; the authors used the azo-initiator to initiate a RAFT polymerization whilst simultaneously performing an ATRP initiation.…”

“…Crosslinked binders limit the recycling of these pieces. Therefore, remendable adhesives, that could be easily removed to facilitate the recycling of these pieces present a huge interest and were widely studied over the last decades …”

“…[1][2][3][4] In particular, it has been pointed out that using remendable adhesives, also as coatings, would lead to better recycling, especially for vehicles' end-of-life or electronic waste. Indeed they are irreversibly cured into a highly cross-linked network giving an infusible and insoluble material.…”
