Thermoacoustic Tomography and the Circular Radon Transform: Exact Inversion Formula

Abstract: Thermoacoustic computed tomography (TACT) is an emerging hybrid imaging method for non-invasive medical diagnosis and fully three-dimensional visualization of biological probes. Within this modality electromagnetic illumination is used to induce acoustic waves inside an object of interest. In this paper, we assume that a cylindrical array of line detectors is used to record the acoustical data. This leads to the mathematical problem of inverting the circular Radon transform. The circular Radon transform arises … Show more

“…Radon transform and 3D image reconstruction is illustrated in many applications, i.e., computed tomography [15] and thermoacoustic tomography [39]. Obtaining tomographic image from projections data and conversion has been introduced in [15,[18][19][20]40,41].…”

“…The tomographic images are generated from PA signals by using a reconstruction algorithm based on the inversely solving the photoacoustic wave equation. Several reconstruction algorithms, such as back projection [23], Radon transform [25], and Fourier-domain algorithms [26], have been developed for PAT. The spatial resolution and the penetration depth of a PAT system are scalable with the ultrasonic frequency.…”
