A high near-infrared (NIR) reflective cooling compound with flame retardant characteristics was fabricated by incorporating antimony trioxide (Sb 2 O 3 ) and decabrominated diphenyl ethane (DBDPE) into ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The solar reflectivity and cooling capacities of the control sample and EVA compounds with either Sb 2 O 3 or DBDPE, and EVA composites embedded with Sb 2 O 3 and DBDPE, were evaluated by ultraviolet-visible-near infrared analysis and temperature tests. The effect of Sb 2 O 3 and DBDPE on the flammability, thermal behavior, and mechanical properties of EVA copolymer were determined via the UL-94 burning test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile and tearing tests. Compared with the glass blank, EVA compound filled with 10 wt% Sb 2 O 3 and 30 wt% DBDPE showed a roughly 17.3 C and 38.0 C decrease during sunlight exposure and in indoors, respectively, accompanied by the maximum NIR reflectivity of 68.8% in all as-prepared blends. Moreover, this as-prepared compound met a UL-94 V-0 classification and reached a LOI value of 29.3%. Notably, the singular addition of either Sb 2 O 3 or DBDPE improved the cooling capability of EVA but rarely fulfilled the fire retardant demand. In contrast, the incorporation of Sb 2 O 3 and DBDPE improved the desirable cooling and flame retardant properties.

Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is the flexible plastic material commonly used in industries. The EVA samples, in green, white and black colors were irradiated with absorbed doses of 0.01 kGy up to 10.0 kGy using a 60Co Gamma Cell-220 system, and the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometry technique was used for evaluating the samples. This work aimed to investigate EVA samples in measurements with gamma radiation, analyzing the linearity through the Principal Component Regression (PCR) method and its sensitivity. For sensitivity and linearity, the green samples showed the best results, followed by white and black EVA samples. The PCR method inflated gradually the number of principal components, then reducing the residuals between the measured and calculated values, consequently obtaining maximum linearity of 1.000 for all EVA samples. In conclusion, the FTIR was adequate for the acquisition of absorbance spectra, the linearity via PCR and sensitivity showed good results indicating that the EVA detectors can be useful in radiation measurements.

Pyrolysis of wheat straw pellets in a pilot‐scale reactor: Effect of temperature and residence time

Pyrolysis of two types of pellets (T1: 100% wheat straw, and T2: 70% wheat straw; 10% sawdust, 10% biochar, and 10% bentonite clay) was performed in a pilot‐scale reactor under a nitrogen environment at 20°C to 700°C. This was to investigate slow pyrolysis yields and gas composition as a function of temperature and residence time. The experimental data were obtained between 300°C and 600°C, with a residence time of 90 min, a nitrogen flow rate of 50 cm3/min, and a heating rate of 20°C/min. The results indicated that the maximum pyrolysis temperature is 605°C with a residence time of 55 min. The product analysis showed that the proportion of gas was higher than that of biochar and bio‐oil. The conversion efficiency increased with higher temperatures and varied between 66% and 76%. The results showed that carbon dioxide was the main component in the produced gas, and the maximum gas concentration was 63.6% at 300°C for T1. The higher temperature and longer residence time increased the syngas (CO + H2) composition for both T1 and T2 treatments. Nevertheless, the produced biochar had a high carbon content and retained a high calorific value, indicating slow pyrolysis is the ideal utilization route of wheat straw pellet biomass for biochar.
