Thermodynamic Analysis of Precipitation Process of MX-type Phases in High Strength Low Alloy Steels

Abstract: The paper presents the results of thermodynamic analysis of precipitation process of MX-type interstitial phases in austenite. The subject of the investigation were two newly developed high strength low alloy microalloyed steels with similar concentration of C and N and with diversified amount of Nb, Ti and V microadditions. Thermodynamic analysis of the state of phase equilibrium of structural constituents, taking into consideration the austenite of investigated microalloyed steels, was mainly focused on anal… Show more

“…First, an analysis of the precipitation of single nitrides and carbides introduced into the steel of microadditions was carried out as a function of temperature, which was based mainly on the dependence (1) and equations (2-4) concerning the mass balance of elements. The following values of the constants from equation (1) were used for the calculations: for the TiN phase -A = 19800, B = 7.78; for the TiC phase -A=10745, B = 5.33; for the VN phase -A = 7840, B = 3.02; for the VC phase -A = 9500, B = 6.72 [14,20,28,[31][32][33][34][35].…”

“…Considering that these phases demonstrate mutual solubility [55,56], they will form (Ti,Nb) (C,N) complex carbonitrides -which improve ductility. Microstructure of the samples near fracture consists of elongated austenite grains, on the boundaries of which there are very fine grains of recrystallized g phase (Fig.…”

“…In the practice of thermomechanical controlled processing, spray cooling enables direct quenching of forged parts directly from hot deformation temperatures [ 8 , 12 ] and is a convenient way for realization of interrupted cooling [ 13 ]. Technological realization of continuous cooling with interrupted quenching, isothermal quenching, austempering or martempering and tempforming [ 14 , 15 ], and last but not least, heat treating large cross-sections calls for instant intensified heat transfer conditions with simultaneous flexibility of controlling heat flux for an optimized run of cooling curve in crucial locations in relation to critical points and/or time intervals to provide proper kinetics of nucleation of microstructure strengthening/controlling precipitates [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ].…”
