Thermodynamic Properties of Bismuth Trifluoride

Abstract: Thermodynamic properties were determined for bismuth trifluoride that had been dried by heating in a stream of hydrogen fluoride. The melting point was found to be 649° C. The thermodynamic functions of the gaseous molecule were calculated from estimates of the molecular geometry and vibration frequencies. Heat capacities were measured for the solid and liquid, and the heat (5.16 kcal) and entropy of fusion (5.6 eu) were obtained. The vapor pressure over the solid was measured by a transpiration method. The vap… Show more

“…Significant mass loss occurred above 575 • C, which reflects the known high vapor pressure at higher temperatures which amounts to ca. 20 mbar at this temperature [9]. Several minor endothermic peaks are present in the curve in that range, likely related to heat loss due to sublimation.…”

“…An older study reports BiF 3 to be cubic [8] (gananite, pdf 39-345), and this is in agreement with X-ray spectra that were performed in the framework of the current study. BiF 3 is a stable chemical under ambient conditions, aside from minor hygroscopicity, and melts congruently at about 649 • C without polymorphism [3,9].…”
