Thermodynamic Properties of Micellization of Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate in the Aqueous-Rich Region of 1-Pentanol and 1-Hexanol

Abstract: Apparent molar volumes, Φv, and isentropic compressibilities, κ s , of the aqueous solutions of anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), have been derived from experimental densities, ρ, and speed of sound, u, data measured below 0.40 mol·kg−1 at T = (298.15, 303.15, 308.15, and 313.15) K using an Anton Paar densimeter (DSA-5000). Conductance measurements were also made for aqueous solutions of SDBS to obtain critical micelle concentration at the above temperatures. Apparent molar volumes an… Show more

“…The hydrophobicity of the alkyl chain may affect the antimicrobial as well as other membrane interactions. As compared to the longer alkyl chain gemini surfactants [24], 12-E2-12 was found to be less hemolytic as indicated by its higher HC 50 . The cationic ester-linked gemini surfactant shows hemolytic activity at higher concentration than the conventional cationic surfactant which indicates its less toxicity to human cells [24].…”

“…It was purified by the method given in the literature (Dubey, 2009;Alauddin et al, 1988). The purified product was dried under vacuum in the presence of P 2 O 5 for a few days.…”

“…The micellization of SDBS in aqueous solution and its interactions with medium chain alcohols, 1-pentanol and 1-hexanol, have been examined critically (Dubey, 2009) in which various thermodynamic parameters are assessed at different concentrations of surfactant as well as that of alcohols. It has been observed that the short chain alcohols are preferentially solubilized in the palisade layer, which contains the surfactant head groups as is concluded from the NMR studies (Reekmans et al, 1990).…”
