Thermodynamics of ion exchange of H+ by Na+ or NH4 + on ion-exchange resins based on C-tetramethylcalix[4]resorcinarene

Abstract: The corrected selectivity coefficients of the ion exchange H + -Na + and H + -NH 4 + on ion exchange resins based on C tetramethylcalix[4]resorcinarene were calculated from the experi mental data obtained from studying ion exchange equilibria. The preference of the ion ex change resins for cations increases in the sequence: Na + < NH 4 + << H + , and the ion exchange resin based on (2 furyl)hydroxymethyltetramethylcalix[4]resorcinarene has a higher prefer ence for ammonium cations. According to the results of … Show more

“…Systematic studies of this problem are scarce in the literature; most reports refer to low concentrations (0.1 N or less) with the reaction developing in only one direction (Tanaka et al 2000;Kuronen et al 2000;Altschuler et al 2004;Boyd et al 1974;Chen et al 1990;de Barros et al 2002;Heo et al 1990;Valverde et al 2001;Carmona et al 2008;Borge et al 1999;Sherry and Walton 1967;Miyata 1983). “…Bifunctional polymer 2 contains strongly acidic -SO3H groups which dissociate with the formation of free protons over a wide pH range (0-14), and weakly acidic phenol OH groups. The thermodynamics of ion exchange in polymers 1 and 2 based on cis-tetraphenylcalix [4]resorcinarene was investigated in [14,15]. The purpose of the present work is to determine the limiting stage of ion exchange kinetics and to give a mathematical description of cation flux in network polymers 1 and 2 based on cis-tetraphenylcalix [4]resorcinarene.…”
