Thermodynamics of Polymer Melts Swollen with Supercritical Gases

Abstract: We report gas solubilities in molten polymers for two systems: the solubility of carbon dioxide in poly(dimethylsiloxane) and the solubility of 1,1-difluoroethane in polystyrene are measured in the range of temperatures and pressures where the gas is supercritical. The solubility data are correlated by two lattice-theory-based equations of state, namely, the Sanchez-Lacombe and Panayiotou-Vera equations of state, which employ a single adjustable binary interaction parameter. Both equations of state provide sat… Show more

“…Reviewing the literature for polymer processing and macromolecules, the Sanchez-Lacombe (S-L), and Panayiotou-Vera (P-V) equations yield fairly accurate predictions for pure polymer melt and diluted melt polymer solutions. 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 Both use equilibrium chemical potentials in the melt and gas phases to correlate solubility to the pure phase through a binary interaction parameter. The models and modeling techniques may possibly be extended to pitch as well.…”

“…7 Most of the polymers for which solubility of CO 2 has been reported were homogeneous. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8] There are few data available for polymer composites and blends. In this paper, using the MSB, the solubility of CO 2 in the polyethylene/titanium dioxide composites is measured at temperature in the range from 423 to 473 K and pressure up to 15 MPa.…”
