Thermoelectric Properties of Al–Ga–Pd–Re Icosahedral Quasicrystals

Abstract: Various compositions of AlGaPdRe icosahedral quasicrystals (QCs) were synthesized using arc-melting and annealing methods, and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. With the same trend in the Seebeck coefficient as AlPdMn and AlPdRe QCs, the AlGa PdRe QC has a similar pseudogap electronic structure near the Fermi level. More particularly, we found that a sample with a nominal composition of Al 66 Ga 4 Pd 21 Re 9 exhibited a higher Seebeck coefficient of 90 µV K ¹1 at 373 K, and is thus a highly ef… Show more

“…Although very small amounts of the Al 11 Re 4 and Al 3 Pd 2 binary phases are observed in sintered samples, σ and S increase with Ga substitution [60], which is a different trend to Al–Ga–Pd–Mn quasicrystals. Ga substitution leads to a decrease in the phonon thermal conductivity, and results in ZT increasing from 0.12 to 0.18 [60]. However, this value does not exceed the maximum value of 0.26 for the Al 68 Ga 3 Pd 20 Mn 9 quasicrystal.…”

“…[ 6 ] Another example of enhancing zT max involved the synthesis of Al–Pd–Re‐based QCs via substituting Ru [ 14 ] and Fe [ 15 ] for Re, along with that of Ga for Al. [ 16 ]…”

“…5(b), σ increases exponentially with increasing T , which is a typical trend in intrinsic semiconductors. The σ at 350 K is approximately an order of magnitude lower than the corresponding value of the Al-Pd-Re QC [6,[32][33][34] which was regarded as being closest to the semiconducting state to date. Figure 5(c) shows the T dependences of κ and κ el (≡Lσ T , where L is the effective Lorenz number), and κ lat (≡κ − κ el ), where L is obtained via DFT calculations using the same conditions that were used for S. κ increases with increasing T up to 800 K because of the increasing κ el .…”
