Thermogalvanic corrosion of Alloy 31 in different heavy brine LiBr solutions

Abstract: Thermogalvanic corrosion generated between two electrodes of Alloy 31, a highlyalloyed austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08031), has been investigated imposing different temperature gradients in three deaerated LiBr solutions, under open circuit conditions by using a zero-resistance ammeter (ZRA). Besides EIS spectra were acquired in order to explain the obtained results. On the whole, cold Alloy 31 electrodes were anodic to hot Alloy 31 electrodes, since an increase in temperature favoured the cathodic behavio… Show more

“…a). This semi‐circle is associated with either the charge transfer reaction, between the sample surface and the electrolyte, that occurs at the metal/electrolyte interface or with the properties of the passive surface film . In addition, the increase in the arc of the semi‐circle is indicative of an increase in the film stability .…”

“…In the passive region, the SMAT sample passive current densities were lower than for the untreated sample. The decrease in current density resulted because the passivating oxide film dominated over the dissolution rate on the bare surface [29][30][31][32] . By comparing the current densities at the same polarized potential, a significant reduction in dissolution current of the SMAT sample can be observed.…”
