One of the most common melt production units in mineral wool product manufacture is a shaft type unit - cupola furnace. The process feature of raw material preparation is a screening process of both solid fuel (coke) and mineral matter (gabbro, limestone). At that quite large amount of fine fraction materials is generated, which are impossible to be used in a cupola furnace considering severe fractional makeup requirements for the charge materials. The usage of fine fraction is possible with a briquetting process. Four-component mixture involving mineral matter (gabbro), coke fines, binding agents and water was used for a trial lot briquette formation. The binding agent most efficient for their formation was determined experimentally. It was established that drying time sufficient to get a strong product comprises 10 minutes at the temperature of 100 °С. STA 449 F3 Jupiter unit was used for thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analyses and coke fine samples were examined.
