Thermomechanical Properties of CoNiCrAlY-BN-Polyester Composite Coatings Elaborated by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying

Abstract: This study concerns the mechanical properties of CoNiCrAlY-BN-Polyester composite coatings elaborated by Atmospheric Plasma Spray (APS) and used as abradable seals in the aeronautic industry. The objective is to determine the influence of the diameter of the plasma torch on the coating micrograph morphologies and on the resulting coating thermal and mechanical effective properties. The thermo-mechanical effective properties were then estimated by Finite Element modelling (thanks to the multipurpose finite elem… Show more

“…The High-Pressure Compressor (HPC) and High-Pressure Turbine stages shown in Figure 1a operate at extremely high temperatures, requiring the use of materials such as NiCrAl-Bentonite and CoNiCrAlY-BN-Polyester coated on the inside circumference of casing over which turbine blades are continuously rotated to maintain clearance between the blade and casing. This is to upgrade the High-Pressure (HP) Turbine's current clearing seal, which consists of thermal barriers [31].…”

“…To increase the use of coatings, a balance between spalling resistance, surface finish, erosion, and abradability is required. High-temperature damage, high-temperature exposure, creep failures, fatigue failures, corrosion failures, and failures are all eliminated [1,8,9] as well, making gas turbine blades far more reliable.…”
