Thermoplastic vulcanizate nanocomposites based on thermoplastic polyurethane and millable polyurethane blends reinforced with organoclay prepared by melt intercalation technique: Optimization of processing parameters via statistical methods

Abstract: Statistical approaches including Taguchi design of experiments (DOE), analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple linear regression analysis were employed to determine optimum processing conditions for successful preparation of a thermoplastic vulcanizate nanocomposite (TPVNC) based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/millable polyurethane (MPU) blend reinforced with an organoclay (TPU/MPU/organoclay = 50/50/3 wt/wt/wt) using an internal mixer. Total numbers of mixing layouts were designed by the application of… Show more

“…In the Taguchi method, determining the mean signal to noise ratio (S/N) for each processing parameter is an important step to assess quality characteristics of the measured data, to compare the relative magnitudes, and to find the optimal combination of processing parameters for desired mechanical properties. The equation for calculating the mean S/N ratio is given later S/Ntrue¯Ai=1ntruetrue∑i=1nStrue/NAiwhere Strue/NAi is the S / N ratios of a set of control parameter A at a given level i .…”

“…Additionally, statistical significance of the effects of processing parameters, by means of p ‐value and percentage contribution ( P C ) of each parameter, on mechanical properties of the EPDM/PP blends was evaluated from the analysis of variance . The percentage contribution can be calculated as follows: %0.75emContribution of Parameter0.25emA0.25em()PC,A=SSASST×100where SS A is the sum of squared deviations for control parameter A (at three different levels) and SS T is the total sum of squared deviations of the total response.…”

“…As a conclusion, the stage of processing (dynamic vulcanization) is of extreme importance, and all aspects involved should be carefully analyzed and optimized, as they may change the final morphology of blends and, with it, completely alter their final properties [108].…”
