Context: Telemetric core-temperature monitoring is becoming more widely used as a noninvasive means of monitoring core temperature during athletic events.Objective: To determine the effects of sensor ingestion timing on serial measures of core temperature during continuous exercise.Design: Crossover study. Setting: Outdoor dirt track at an average ambient temperature of 4.46C 6 4.16C and relative humidity of 74.1% 6 11.0%.Patients or Other Participants: Seven healthy, active participants (3 men, 4 women; age 5 27.0 6 7.5 years, height 5 172.9 6 6.8 cm, body mass 5 67.5 6 6.1 kg, percentage body fat 5 12.7% 6 6.9%, peak oxygen uptake [V O 2peak ] 5 54.4 6 6.9 mLNkg 21 Nmin 21 ) completed the study.Intervention(s): Participants completed a 45-minute exercise trial at approximately 70% V O 2peak . They consumed coretemperature sensors at 24 hours (P1) and 40 minutes (P2) before exercise.Main Outcome Measure(s): Core temperature was recorded continuously (1-minute intervals) using a wireless data logger worn by the participants. All data were analyzed using a 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (trial 3 time), Pearson product moment correlation, and Bland-Altman plot.Results: Fifteen comparisons were made between P1 and P2. The main effect of time indicated an increase in core temperature compared with the initial temperature. However, we did not find a main effect for trial or a trial 3 time interaction, indicating no differences in core temperature between the sensors (P1 5 38.36C 6 0.26C, P2 5 38.36C 6 0.46C).Conclusions: We found no differences in the temperature recordings between the 2 sensors. Introducción: Se conoce que la hidratación juega un papel crucial en el desempeño deportivo. Pero un gran número de estudios que evalúan la hidratación durante la práctica de fútbol han demostrado que gran cantidad de jugadores presentan un estado de deshidratación previo a la práctica de este deporte y que la mayoría de los futbolistas no son capaces de reponer la pérdida de agua por sudoración con la ingesta ad libitum.Objetivos: Analizar el consumo de agua ad libitum, el balance hídrico, la sensación de sed y la tasa de esfuerzo percibido en una muestra juvenil de jugadores de fútbol durante una sesión de entrenamiento.Material y Métodos: 57 jugadores de tres equipos de la categoría juvenil de la cantera de un club de fútbol participaron voluntariamente en el estudio mediante la recogida del peso al inicio y al final del entrenamiento, la sensación de sed, la tasa de esfuerzo percibido y la cuantificación del agua ingerida. Se utilizaron estadísticos descriptivos, correlaciones y análisis de proporciones.Resultados: La ingesta media del global de futbolistas estudiados fue 844,74±351,95mL y la pérdida media de agua corporal de 1274,56±385,82mL. Una tasa de deshidratación media respecto al peso inicial del 0,63%. Se obtuvo una puntuación media de 2,81±1,32 en la escala de sensación de sed. Discusión y conclusiones:Se obtienen tasas de pérdida de agua corporal similares a estudios previos. Los futbolistas no fueron capaces de reponer la pérdida de agua mediante la ingesta de líquido ad libitum, por lo que la ingesta de una cantidad pautada previamente podría llegar a ser de gran ayuda. Context: When assessing exercise hyperthermia outdoors, the validity of certain commonly used body temperature measuring devices has been questioned. A controlled laboratory environment is generally less influenced by environmental factors (eg, ambient temperature, solar radiation, wind) than an outdoor setting. The validity of these temperature measuring devices in a controlled environment may be more acceptable.Objective: To assess the validity and reliability of commonly used temperature devices compared with rectal temperature in individuals exercising in a controlled, high environmental temperature indoor setting and then resting in a cool environment.Design: Time series study. Setting: Laboratory environmental chamber (temperature 5 36.4 6 1.26C [97.5 6 2.166F], relative humidity 5 52%) and cool laboratory (temperature 5 approximately 23.36C [74.06F], relative humidity 5 40%).Patients or Other Participants: Fifteen males and 10 females.Intervention(s): Rectal, gastrointestinal, forehead, oral, aural, temporal, and axillary temperatures were measured with commonly used temperature devices. Temperature was measured before and 20 minutes after entering the environmental chamber, every 30 minutes during a 90-minute treadmill walk in the heat, and every 20 minutes during a 60-minute rest in mild conditions. Device validity and reliability were assessed with various statistical measures to compare the measurements using each device with rectal temperature. A device was considered invalid if the mean bias (average difference between rectal and device temperatures) was more than 60.276C (60.506F).Main Outcome Measure(s): Measured temperature from each device (mean and across time).Results: Conclusions: Even during laboratory exercise in a controlled environment, devices used to measure forehead, temporal, oral, aural, and axillary body sites did not provide valid estimates of rectal temperature. Only intestinal temperature measurement met the criterion. Therefore, we recommend that rectal or intestinal temperature be used to assess hyperthermia in individuals exercising indoors in the heat.Key Words: core body temperature, hyperthermia, tympanic membrane Key Points N As indicated by mean bias values, invalid estimates of rectal temperature (the ''gold standard'') were provided by forehead sticker, oral temperature, temporal temperature, aural temperature, and axillary temperature.N Intestinal temperature was the only measurement considered valid.
