“…Of all the thermoresponsive polymers, poly( N ‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), which exhibits the soluble‐to‐insoluble phase transition in water at LCST around 32 °C, is the most popular one. Various PNIPAM‐based thermoresponsive block copolymers have been prepared by the controlled radical polymerization techniques such as atom transfer radical polymerization, nitroxide‐mediated polymerization, and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization . Besides linear thermoresponsive polymers, the nonlinear poly(meth)acrylates, for example, poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate], and polystyrenics, for example, poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether vinylphenyl] (PmPEGV), both of which have short poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side‐chains, are found to exhibit LCST in water.…”

“…Below LCST, polymers are hydrophilic and exist as coils due to hydrogen bonding with surrounding water molecules; above LCST, they undergo a conformational change from coil to globule due to the disruption of hydrogen bonds. Poly( N ‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and their analogs are the most studied polymer due to their near body temperature LCST response at 32 °C. However, due to recent concerns on potential cytotoxicity of residual monomers and protein interactions with PNIPAM‐based copolymers, other classes of polymers such as polymethacrylates containing pendant oligo(ethylene oxide) (i.e., poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether methacrylate, POEOMA) have been explored as a water‐soluble and biocompatible alternative …”
