Thermosensitive behavior of amphiphilic triblock copolymers based on poly(acrylic acid) and poly(propylene oxide)

Abstract: Self-association in aqueous solution of amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-b-PPO-b-PAA) copolymers having various outer PAA block lengths are presented. These copolymers show two thermosensitive behaviors. The first one, due to hydrogen bonds between PAA and PPO resulting in large aggregates, was observed by visible spectroscopy. The second one, due to the association of PPO middle block into aggregates, was evidenced by dynamic light scattering and pyrene fluoresc… Show more

“…The cloud point was observed to depend on the degree of neutralization and the length of the PAA blocks, which is related to the amount of hydrogen bonds between the different polymer blocks and water. 42 Copolymers of methacrylic acid and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) were recently shown to express UCST behavior in alcohols. 43…”

“…The influence of t BA/AA ratio in the monophasic domain (clear solution) onto the thermo‐sensitive behaviour was then investigated (Table ). In our previous study, the association of the PPO middle block of D‐[P(AA) x ] 2 copolymers under temperature was demonstrated . The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of the D‐[P(AA) 19 ] 2 copolymer was measured at pH 7 and at various temperature by pyrene fluorescence (Fig.…”

“…Decreasing the pH of D‐[P(AA) 19 ] 2 solution under a critical value of 3.9 (Table ) resulted in the formation of large aggregates without precipitation. In our previous manuscript, we proved that this pH‐responsive behavior was governed by hydrogen bonds between carboxylic acid functions of poly(acid acrylic) (PAA) outer blocks and ether functions of PPO middle block …”
