ThHSFA1 Confers Salt Stress Tolerance through Modulation of Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging by Directly Regulating ThWRKY4

Abstract: Heat shock transcription factors (HSFs) play critical roles in several types of environmental stresses. However, the detailed regulatory mechanisms in response to salt stress are still largely unknown. In this study, we examined the salt-induced transcriptional responses of ThHSFA1-ThWRKY4 in Tamarix hispida and their functions and regulatory mechanisms in salt tolerance. ThHSFA1 protein acts as an upstream regulator that can directly activate ThWRKY4 expression by binding to the heat shock element (HSE) of th… Show more

“…These results indicate that PeHSF plays an essential role in the detoxification of ROS and in the transactivation of antioxidant genes under high salinity stress [ 281 ]. Transgenic poplar plants overexpressing ThHSFA1 exhibited increased tolerance to salt stress, reduced ROS levels, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities under salt stress [ 282 ]. Moreover, compared with wild-type tomatoes, tomatoes overexpressing SlGGP-LIKE presented higher levels of reduced AsA, the xanthophyll cycle, and the AsA/DHA ratio in normal conditions, and higher levels of reduced AsA, reduced GSH, total GSH, higher AsA/DHA and GSH/GSSG ratios, and the xanthophyll cycle under salt stress conditions.…”

“…This investigation identified 5 LrHSF genes ( LrHSF5 , LrHSF9 , LrHSF11 , LrHSF20 , and LrHSF21 ) that responded to cold stress in L. radiata ( Figure 7 A). In Tamarix hispida , salt tolerance was positively modulated by ThHSFA1 , which directly stimulated ThWRKY4 [ 83 ]. In rice, OsHsfB2b has been observed to negatively control salt and drought tolerances [ 66 ].…”

“…In recent years, the research of WRKY and MAPK genes has attracted much attention. Many studies have been conducted on the respective functions of WRKY and MAPK genes and their interactions [36][37][38][39]. All these studies provide references and ideas for our research.…”
