Thiazide Diuretics, Potassium, and the Development of Diabetes

Abstract: Abstract-National guidelines and a recent clinical trial have supported the use of thiazide diuretics as the preferred initial pharmacological treatment for hypertension. However, evidence from this and other clinical trials have also found an increased incidence of new onset diabetes among those patients receiving thiazide diuretics. The mechanisms responsible for the increased incidence of diabetes with thiazide diuretics have not been fully elucidated. This article provides a review of intervention studies … Show more

“…For many years, studies have noted glucose impairment in some patients treated with thiazide‐based diuretics 36, 37. Although still under debate, recent studies have also demonstrated associations with thiazide‐based treatments and increased risk of type II diabetes and subsequently increased the risk of cardiovascular events 38, 39.…”

“…Like statins, thiazide diuretics are associated with an increased risk of developing T2D [110]. The increases in blood glucose levels seen with thiazide diuretics are reversed when drugs are discontinued, even after many years of treatment [111].…”

“…Diabeteses betegben fi gyelemre méltó mellékhatásuk, hogy rontják a glükóztoleranciát, hyperurikaemiát okozhatnak és csök-kentik a káliumszintet. Férfi akban erectilis diszfunkciót kiváltó hatásuk sem érdektelen [22]. A béta-blokkolók (kivéve a nevibolol és carvedilol) dyslipidaemiát okozhatnak (a trigliceridszintet 15-30%-kal emelhetik, a HDL-koleszterin-szintet 6-8%-kal csökkenthetik), ugyanakkor fokozzák az inzulinrezisztenciát, és diabetes mellitusban elfedhetik a hypoglykaemia tüneteit.…”
